CBS News Detroit spoke to two local organizations this afternoon who told they're fighting what they're calling unnecessary greed from DTE, especially when most of us here in Southeast Michigan feel like we can't do anything about these rate increases. We're stuck right now as Michiganders in a constant cycle of never-ending rate hikes. Just days after DTE Energy secured a $242 million rate increase affecting the electricity bills of millions of Michiganders. The energy company says they plan to submit a formal application for another increase sometime around April. 27th, the fact that we're seeing another rate hike request just days after they already had received $242 million in increases to our energy bills, it's disappointing, but honestly, it's not surprising.
DTE Energy says that recent investments in the electric system resulted in 2025 being the most reliable for customers in nearly two decades. In a statement sent to CBS Detroit they say they need more investment. The company must continue to invest to deliver the energy our customers demand and deserve. But some local organizations like the Michigan League of Conservation Voters are saying that the financial success of DTE shareholders is coming off the backs of working Michigan families. The CEO and top executives actually get bonuses not just based on performance but also based on how much they're able to raise our rates.
Attorney General Dana Nessel said today that she is astonished by DTE asking for another price hike, and she says that she will fight to intervene in any potential rate increases.
And this news come just few days after DTE Energy got ordered to pay $100 million penalty for violating the Clean Air Act in Metro Detroit.
A judge ordered DTE Energy and its three subsidiaries to pay up over pollution from the EES Coke Battery on Zug Island, wedged between River Rouge and Detroit. In 2018 alone, the facility pumped out 3,200 tons of sulfur dioxide — more than 1,000 tons over the 2,100-ton annual limit.
Sulfur dioxide pollution is linked to asthma attacks, heart attacks, stroke, higher blood pressure, increased cancer risk, Alzheimer’s risk, and early death. The court gave DTE 250 days to seek new permits from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy.
Meanwhile, Michigan is emerging as a significant hub for AI data centers, with major projects like the Stargate Michigan campus and Oracle's new facility in Saline Township set to enhance the state's technological infrastructure. So, new energy price hikes and more pollution are still coming, and we the people are still sleeping.
This system will drain every cent from the ordinary people — 99% of global population — and turned us into slaves of energy dependency who will only think about their own survival while they are genociding people day after day in their endless wars to end up with their goal of only 5 million chosen "worthy" one to restart human race. In Minnesota, ICE detained a 16-year-old asylum-seeker who was then quietly transferred out of state after labeling him an "unaccompanied minor," even though his father lives locally. The family attorney struggled to locate him and were told by authorities they had no record of his custody. After further investigation, the teen was located in Michigan Christian Service facility with financial ties to the DeVos family. While in custody, the teen reported being injected with multiple vaccines in both arms without his consent and not being told what those vaccines were.
A few days ago, a legal refugee from Burma, blind man and father of two is found dead after allegedly being released by Border Patrol and left to find his way home 5 miles away in Buffalo, N.Y.
Buffalo Mayor Sean M. Ryan described Shah Alam's death as preventable and deeply disturbing in a statement shared to social media on Feb. 25.
"A vulnerable man — nearly blind and unable to speak English — was left alone on a cold winter night with no known attempt to leave him in a safe, secure location. That decision from U.S. Customs and Border Protection was unprofessional and inhumane," Ryan said.
